Control that kitsch!

Thursday, September 3, 2015

Everyone keeps asking me... What is FUNctional kitsch???

Well... Since I am a collector at heart, I had to make a rule to control that kitsch...  It must be functional or I must have a specific spot or a need for the item. Or NO! So, when shopping I often had to stop myself and ask- Is it functional? ... Where will I put it?

And then I found it!   PYREX... I  ❤  PYREX !!! It's OLD.... It's PRETTY... It's KITSCHY and collectable.
And It's even functional. VERY functional. I use my PYREX everyday.  So this is my main focus of collecting but I love to throw some fun-ctional kitsch around my home & life!
So that's it.... Its #FUNctional so its okay! #pyrexia #pyrexproblems

Pee Wee is a friend of mine...

Thursday, August 27, 2015

I am a Pee Wee Fan and I am proud of it!

Pee Wee is kitschy, fun and has slightly strange side to him.   Maybe that’s why I like him! And I am not referring to his little run in with the law...I mean his strange sense of humor!

I loved Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. With a name like kitsch-in-kitchen don’t you already know that I am going to love his house! I am not saying I would like to live in this house, but I do appreciate the over the top kitsch!

I remember when I was a teenager there was a house on the way to my Dad's house, that my younger brother called Pee Wee’s house. The lawn was covered with fun stuff! It was too over the top and I was no longer jealous… I realized then if you are not Pee Wee Herman you need to control your kitsch! Or your house will look like this!

Back to PEE WEE....

Did you know that there was Copper Filigree PYREX in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure?

This was in the scene where he had to wash dishes at the roadside Diner.
That’s where Pee Wee’s love for PYREX must have started… And possibly the reason why he wanted to be a guest host for my PYREX sale.

Here are a few of Pee Wee’s highlights from my INSTAGRAM sale…

Yes he is Pee Wee so had to ham it up! And we even used the hash tag #PyrexPorn LOL.

And of course #PeeWeeLovesPyrex !

Missed the fun?
Don't be sad!
You can go back and see it all!

Watermelon Feta Salad

Thursday, August 20, 2015

Recipe

I posted this a few years ago on my old blog and it was a BIG hit so I thought I would share it here!

Watermelon Feta Salad

It may  sound a little weird, but so am I...

This watermelon and feta salad is easy-to make and really yummy!!! I usually have all of these in my pantry, except the Feta. I am not usually a fan of Feta, but it balances well with the sweetness of the watermelon.

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh mint
  • 8 cups diced seedless watermelon
  • 1 chopped sweet onion
  • 1 chopped, seeded English cucumber
  • 4 ounces feta cheese
Preparation
  • Whisk 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup red wine vinegar, 1/2 tsp. each salt and pepper and 3 Tbsp. chopped fresh mint. Toss with 8 cups diced seedless watermelon, 1 chopped sweet onion and 1 chopped, seeded English cucumber. Crumble 4 oz. feta on top.

It's Kitsch-In-Kitchen!

I've always had a love for all things old and kitschy.

I grew up going to antiques stores and flea markets. My first bed was 100 years old...

As a young girl,  I roamed the aisles of  US 1 Flea Market & went to auctions with my mom. Back then collected I collected new things like smurf action figures, strawberry shortcake dolls & cabbage patch kids. I loved stickers, especially, Scratch N' Sniff and Garbage Pail Kids...

When I was teenager I shopped at New York City Flea Markets and Thrift stores... I bought clothing and accessories. I loved mixing vintage items into my wardrobe.

In high school- I collected Metal Lunch Boxes.  In college and when I moved into my first apartment in NYC, I collected toys and then it was PEZ dispensers for the apartment, I added 80s character drinking glasses.

I guess I am nostalgic with my collections. I love things that take me back to a happy place. Don't you?!

When I moved to California, I only brought my favorites... The rest of my collections went into my moms basement in New Jersey. Maybe you bought some of it at her estate sale... LOL :)

My latest obsession is fun-ctional kitchen kitsch and vintage PYREX...
And that's why I named this blog Kitsch-in-Kitchen.
I hope you enjoy my kitschy kitchen fun!
